As I drift back into consciousness, I hear people murmuring around me. “Should we wake her up?” whispers a girls voice. There’s a short pause before a boy answers. “I think so” he replies sounding concerned “she’s been out for a while”. A hand shakes my shoulder and I bolt straight up as a flood of memories from earlier come rushing in. I hold back a sob as I bend over and try to asses my situation. I can’t see more than a few feet in front of my face, but that is enough to see that I am surrounded by two girls and two boys “Who are y-you?” I choke out, “what is this place and why can I barely see?”. “We are a group of crazy blood thirsty people cast away from society! We have come to take you to our evil lair!” the other boy says. I see one of the girls elbowing him sharply in the ribs. “We are not, and you know it Henry” she says before turning to address me “I’m Kara, that knucklehead is Henry” she points to the boy she elbowed “that’s Harper” she gestures to the other girl “and that’s Thomas”. “My name is Piper, and if you don’t mind me asking, do you have the defective chromosome too?” I ask tentatively, thinking I already know the answer. “If I had a bad gene, it would have showed itself a while ago. I’ve been here almost three years and I’m fine” Henry answers my question, the others nodding their own conformation. ‘Well then, it’s nice to meet you I guess” I say. My eyes have almost fully adjusted when Harper extends a hand out to help me out the bed I’m in. “How would you like a tour before we eat?” she asks, “This place is pretty big”. “Sure” I say, taking her hand. If I’m going to be here a while I might as well get to know this place. From here all I can see is the people surrounding me, a few beds nearby, and some weird faint lights in random areas. “To start off, this is the girls area” Harper says. Piper goes and sits on one of the beds and the others follow to sit with her or on the other bed. “This one’s mine and that one’s Harpers” she says, pointing to the second. I notice trunks at the foot of each bed and move to open mine. It’s full of clothes that I recognize, but still have the tags on. There are also a few stuffed animals that I kept (these I think are the original) and a couple books. “How did they know what I wear? Did they go to my house?” I ask worriedly. It makes me uncomfortable thinking that strangers went through my stuff. “It was the same for all of us” Thomas says “trunks full of our stuff, and the kitchen is stocked with food that we like. I wouldn’t be surprised if new food was added that you enjoy.” “huh” I think. I had thought that this wasn’t going to be so nice here. “Wait, how did people get get in and out of here without you guys noticing?” I ask. “They gassed us to, just not a heavy as you got” Henry shrugs. I get the feeling he’s the laid-back person of the group. “So all of a sudden you guys just passed out?” I press. “no, they usually do it when we’re already asleep. We just wake up a few hours later” Harper says. I close the chest and stand. “Ok, so this is where we sleep. What about the guys?” I look at Thomas and Henry for clarification. “We sleep over in the other corner” Thomas says, “the setup is the same, just with only two beds”. “Let’s go!” Kara jumps up “follow me!”. Thomas departs for what i assume to be the kitchen as we follow Kara along one of the walls and after a few moments come across a cluster of couches and chairs, with one of the strange lights hanging above a coffee table in the center of it all. There is a cabinet with shelves holding games and books next to one of the couches. “This is what we call the entertainment area” Kara announces, “we spend most of the day here because it’s the only place with light to read by and comfortable seating.” We go through the furniture and, after crossing more empty space, end up in the boys sleeping area. “It’s pretty much the same as yours, nothing special” Henry says. He’s right that they’re the same. The only difference is that there’s only two beds instead of three. “On to the kitchen” Kara says, pulling a head of the group “I can smell pasta sauce. Yum!” we make our way to the kitchen (it’s about as far as the two sleeping areas are from each other) and meet Thomas there. The kitchen area is a large alcove with a pantry and industrial sized everything and another one of those lights that gives off just enough like to properly see by and nothing more. Off to the side is a table with five chairs. “They really spared no expense on this place did they” I say taking sitting down in one of the chairs “from what Dr. Rogers implied, I was thinking more solitary confinement, not five-star hotel with the lights broken.” I expect a laugh, but instead they all glance at each other solemnly. “What’s wrong?” I ask. “We’ll tell you about it while we eat” Harper responds coming over to the table with a steaming plate of pasta. “Go get some food and we’ll answer your questions”.
